Common Problems Making Wine

One of the best ways to avoid making mistakes when making wine, is to understand what the most common mistakes are. Whether or not you are a beginner winemaker, or experienced, mistakes can happen to everybody. Learning what they, and how to avoid them, is key to making great wine.

The most common problem in winemaking failures is attributed to inadequate equipment. A lot of winemakers make the mistake of using common household items. Many of these items seem familiar to some winemakers, such as carboys, spoons, air locks, and such, that are required for the wine making process. It is important to know that specific winemaking equipment is cronstructed from specific materials. One large mistake is to reuse items that have prviously been used to hold other stuff, such as food. While a food container may seem clean, chances are there are lingering odors and chemicals in it that you may or may not smell. These odors and chemicals can become immersed in to the plastic, and become almost impossible to remove. Instead, it is better invest the small amount of money needed to purchase some proper winemaking equipment so that you can ensure the success of your wine.

Another common mistake is failing to follow instructions. As the process of making wine may seem very complicated to beginners, many will try to simplify it. This is a big mistake, as is pretty much taking any shortcuts in anything you do. Take baking for example: following the exact recipe and using exact measurements will result in a good product; not using correct measurements or following the recipe will result in something that may resemble something edible, at most. The same is true in winemaking.

The quality of water you use can also impact the quality of the wine you make. Hard water, or mineral-rich water, can result in wine that has flavors that are off, and can even result in a hazy looking wine. Water from salt-exchange water softener should also not be used. To be sure you are usually quality water, and to be take one more step to ensure you make quality wine, use bottled, or filter your water through a quality filter.

Another common mistake in winemaking is eliminating the sulfite from the wine. One of the most common reason for this is due to sulfite allergies. There are quite a few people that are allergic to sulfites; however, it is important to understand, that even by removinging the sulfites from the wine, you will still not have a sulfite-free product. During fermentation, the yeast actually creates sulfites; but even at that, you will not have enough sulfites in the wine. The purpose of th esulfites to prevent oxidation and spoiling. A wine with a minimal amount of sulfites will start to change flavor in less then a month, and eventually, even in as little as three months, become undrinkable.

Finally, one of best ways to avoid mistakes, is to have patience, and the time needed to make the wine. Successful winemaking is an art form. In order to fully appreciate the fruits of your labor, it is best to wait the time needed for the wine to improve and age before you drink it. In many cases, beginner wine makers drink their wine too soon, and as a result of the young flavor, believe they made a bad batch of wine; when in reality, if they had waited for it to age, it may have been a wonderful batch.
