Typical types of Red Wines, with common food pairings

Pinot Noir

  • Pairings: Very versatile, pairs well with leaner meats such as beef, poulty, ham, pork, lamb, fish, spicy seasoning, creamy sauces, fruits

Sangiovese

  • Pairings: Tomato based sauce, pretty much and Italian food

Zinfandel

  • Pairings: Just about any meat, pasta, poulty, game, seared or grilled fish, cheese

Malbec

  • Pairings: Red meats, roasted poultry, spicer international cuisine ex Mexican, Indian, etc., also good with tomato based foods

Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Pairings: Red meat, chocolate, strong cheeses

Merlot

  • Pairings: Another versatile wine, can go with just about anything

Shiraz and Syrah

  • Pairings: Goes very well with spicier foods, rich flavored meats and other foods
